Should we make an Defense Force / Space Army for Earth?
If the planet is threatened as a whole, are we in utter trouble?
Who will deal with the asteroids, alien invasions and such?
Since the aliens are imaginary we’ll leave them to Richard Hoagland, Bart Sibrel, psychics and astrologers..
As for the asteroids, no known large body is likely to strike the Earth in the next few hundred years. That does not preclude New York or Berlin getting knocked about by a thing the size of a truck, but we can’t detect these anyway and the damage though severe economically would be limited in area. As for undetected larger asteroids, no army can protect you from something you do not know about.
Over the past 2000 years there has been no indication of any city of any size being damaged by asteroids, even though a few big meteorites seem to have struck the Earth. There is no reason to expect that it is going to happen in the next dozen or few hundred years either. The Earth is mostly ocean, and most of the land surface is either wilderness or farmland. A truck sized rock hitting the middle of the Pacific Ocean would hardly be noticed.
