Revelation 6:5

Scales were used to measure items sold and payment. They didn’t have paper money, barter was common, and “clipping” coins was common up until the relatively recent development of those nifty little ridges you see on quarters and dimes (wondered why those were there, didn’t you?) People used to trim the edges of coins (because they were made of precious metal), saving the clippings (and cheating whomever they gave the coin). In those days, even coins were weighed – commonly! – by careful retailers to determine their value, as their “face” value was normally unreliable..
